In order to preserve the diversity and variety of periodicals, they may be subsidised if certain legal requirements are met.
The journalism subsidy is based on Section II of the 1984 Journalism Subsidies Act. It is paid once a year.
Specialist journals and periodicals dealing with other subjects are not part of this subsidy's target group.
The funding requirements can be found in Section II of the 1984 Journalism Subsidies Act.
Funding under Section II of the 1984 Journalism Subsidies Act is, as detailed in the content-related funding requirements in Art. 7(1)(3), available to periodicals that deal primarily with issues of politics, culture of belief (religion) and are not exclusively addressed to a specialist readership.
The decision on the allocation of subsidies is made by KommAustria. In its decisions, it must consider the recommendations of the Journalism Subsidy Advisory Board.
Due to legal provisions, KommAustria's decision can only be made after reviewing all applications and after consulting the Advisory Board established under Art. 9 in the autumn of the year of submission.
