Current Use of AI in the Austrian Telecommunications Sector

The telecommunications sector is accustomed to make use of digitalisation and data science. Telecoms operators have established data warehouses and process a large amount of data from network operations - an important asset for the effective use of advanced artificial intelligence (AI)

This short study, commissioned by RTR and conducted by WIK-Consult, shows where Austrian telecoms operators are already using AI, where they are planning to use it and what challenges the sector sees at national and international level. In particular, the areas of customer management, customer services, network operation, network planning and network configuration were analysed.

Particular attention was paid to the role of regulation and standardisation. Legal uncertainty can hinder the use of AI and innovation. This makes regulation that ensures transparency and clarity all the more important in order to remove potential barriers.

The costs incurred by Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH (RTR-GmbH) for the preparation of the study ‘Use of AI in the Austrian Telecommunications Sector’ are announced at EUR 35,450 (net) in accordance with Art. 20 Par. 5 of the Federal Constitutional Law.
