The Austrian Television Fund

The Austrian Television Fund is a funding agency for television productions in Austria and was set up at RTR Media in the KommAustria Act (KOG). It provides subsidies for the production and commercial exploitation of television films, documentaries and series of independent Austrian film producers. It has an annual budget of €13.5 million.

Funding decisions are made by RTR's Managing Director after consultation of the Review Board in accordance with the funding objectives.

Funding objectives

  • Increase the value added of subsidies paid out in Austria
  • Provide funding for the commercial exploitation of previously funded projects
  • Increase the financing share of TV broadcasters in the production of funded projects
  • Attract further funding to Austria through co-productions
  • Improve the quality of TV productions and the performance of the Austrian film industry
  • Contribute to strengthening the audiovisual sector in Europe
  • Sustainably strengthen Austria as a media location and ensure a diverse cultural landscape

Funding volume

The amount of funding granted is generally up to 20% of total production costs. The absolute maximum amount of funding per applicant and submission date is €2.8 million. This is also the maximum total if there are several applicants from the same group of companies.

In future, the criteria for increased funding will be even more restrictive due to the exceptional nature of the provision (see guidelines). To ensure planning security, applicants should expect the regular funding of 20% of total production costs.
